So you say the power draw is significantly more than the original controllers. I wonder if that means having multiple plugged in would tax the system.

Diddy Kong Racing (at least in Europe) by default stores the saves directly on the cartridge.
From what I read you need to go out of your way into some specific menus to move the saves to the controller memory pak, but I never tested that.

love anthony videos. surprised i missed this one, however this controller does not hold up. with light use the cables wear down and split. noticed some light joystick drift on one of them after 4 months of occasional use. If it was better quality I'd love it. I can't comment on the wireless variant but I had no luck with 2 other wireless n64 controllers so. I recommend the retro-bit trubute64. its cheaper, better quality and is a clone of the old hori n64 controllers.

The reason for the N64 controller's design -- and consequently, the reason Nintendo didn't give the player access to all of the buttons on the controller at once -- is because Nintendo wasn't sure how the transition into 3D would be handled by developers. In some sense, the N64 controller was an experiment that gave developers different configurations/layouts depending on what they felt was best. The idea behind the design was that you could hold the controller 3 different ways. Two of these ways were used extensively, with games alternating between preferring the DPad or the Control Stick for movement (usually depending on whether the game
But only time would tell that one of those ways would essentially go unused, even by FPS games (which might have used the layout the best). The 3rd way to hold the controller is to place your left hand on the left side, and your right hand in the middle. This would have allowed you to move with the DPad, and aim with the Control Stick. But I don't know of any N64 games that used this layout, and it's basically that hindsight that allowed the Control Stick and DPad to be on the same side of the controller with the Brawler64

I disagree with the title of the video. many N64 shooters support comtrol layouts that resemble modern fps comtrols where you aim with the analog stick.
how they do that is by using the dpad on the left as your movement. so it's basically dual analog shooter controls, with the only difference being that instead of a left stick, you use a dpad.
with this comtroller that's impossible to do, hence it doesn't make everything else obsolete

"Sony had to one up Nintendo and actually make a controller design that stood the test of time"

    • Parker

      Parker

      Acum 22 Zile

Yeah, Sony just copied the SNES controller and added handles and an extra set of bumpers. Then Nintendo added a control stick so Sony just copied that as well. I wouldn't say the DualShock stood the test of time though, considering how uncomfortable the thing is to hold. God, the PS4 controller was such a massive upgrade purely on ergonomics alone.

Old N64 sticks are easily fixed, they're not sealed units so they can be taken apart, cleaned, oiled, and reassembled. Just use some machine oil that doesn't gum up, use some Hoppe's #9 that you can find at most outdoor stores. After that they're as good as new and don't creak or stick.....until they need cleaned again.

Seems like this one and retro-bit's wireless controllers actually put time and thought into the sensitivity of the sticks and both of them are rather close, if a touch more sensitive than the original like-new controllers which I have to say, thank god finally they both actually addressed that. My original controller has been worn out for some time now and I've tried looking for replacement parts online for the sticks and they almost all are truly terrible spare steel sticks but that is usually sold out the moment they are in stock and for good reason.
